We are in the midst of an explosion in urban redevelopment worldwide, now approximated at some $2 trillion annually, and there are no signs of it abating anytime soon. Redevelopment is a necessity for cities everywhere, and business is booming. Central business districts are being revitalized. Infrastructure is being updated. Neighborhoods are being redeveloped. Historic buildings are being restored to physical and economic vitality. And in years to come, our metropolitan areas will further deteriorate and redevelopment will become even more dominant. Even when real estate markets slow down, government incentives for urban redevelopment continue. And where there’s high density surrounding it, real estate is always in high demand. The repair and rebuilding of the urban infrastructure – including utilities, roads, bridges, ports, and transportation systems – is long overdue to meet today's needs. These challenges form an unprecedented opportunity not only for government and civic leaders to improve their communities and to stimulate their local economies, but also for developers and builders, engineering and architectural firms, environmental and planning firms, and companies providing products and services – to grow with the continued explosion of redevelopment activity. Successful urban redevelopment in the 21st century will continue to require new models, new players, new perspectives, and new solutions. That’s what Sustainable Urban Redevelopment is all about.
